My e-learning prototype

There are so many clinical skills taught at the Simulation Center, however, my prototype is focused on final year medical students rotation in Anesthesiology where the students are required to acquire basic resuscitation skills in the Simulation Center. This prototype will serve as a pilot intervention for the rest of the clinical skills taught at the Simulation Center.

In the Anesthesiology rotation, final year medical students are taught basic resuscitation skills only once in the Simulation Center and are required to practise on their own thereafter. It has been observed that students do not return to practise soon after they have been taught and because they wait after a long time before they practise, it is possible that they might forget some of the steps in the procedure. This poses a lot pressure on the only facilitator available at the Simulation Center as students tend to be taught all over again.

This prototype will make use of Wikispaces where video demonstrations and procedures on resuscitation skills would be uploaded. All the students would have to watch the video to practise basic resuscitation skills when they return to practise in the Simulation Center. This will be a compulsory academic exercise as part of the Anesthesiology rotation, therefore students would be giving a slot on the time table for this activity. They would have to make comments on the video by writing their reflection on the process of acquiring the skills to encourage deep understanding of the learning activity. This intervention would supplement students  learning in resuscitation skills and 5% mark of the formative assessment would be allocated to student participation and constructive reflection activities.

A need analysis through focus group discussion with the final year students revealed student excitement about the intervention. The Simulation Center has a Wifi internet access to enable this intervention. The only challenge is that they need to be introduced to the use of Wikispace although it is user friendly i believe they will get around it once they are introduced.

  1. Hi Aisha
I like the idea that you want to use wikispaces to encourage learning of the Anesthesiology skills. The fact that the students have to help build on the content, either through reflection or through building of the information of the wikispace will definitely help the students to take a deeper approach to their learning. Be sure that you have all the necessary requirements stipulated for the students on how they will be assessed so that there is no confusion as to what is expected of them
    Kind regards
    Petro

    1. Dear Aisha
Its great that you are using wikispaces. I searched wikispaces and found that you can do so much with it. It can also be used you assignments and projects and what I liked best is that it as scheduling system or a calendar where you can specify dates for the various activities. Your idea for e learning sounds great. One just needs to make sure that instructions for students are clear and precise so that students know exactly what is expected of them. Are you going to have a special face to face orientation session to help the students understand and navigate using wiki spaces.
      Best of luck
      Regards
      Vanitha

  2. Hello Aisha,
Your idea is very good for learning of skill. I agree with you that student forget the skill if they don't practice it often and they don't see it often. Therefore, revision is needed for them to be able to refresh their memory. You make the wikispaces video watching as compulsory before they practice skill is also great.
Could you kindly explain to me when you ask student to write comment on reflection of the process of acquiring the skills?

  3. Good idea. Yamin has a very good question though, regarding the purpose of the reflection. Is this to add to your evaluation phase of the intervention or part of the learning process?
Also, be careful not to expect that students will use the specified time on the timetable to access the wiki. In fact, you should encourage them to access it when it suits them and fits in with their personal study timetable so that it forms part of studying for this module. the time in the timetable should be there to accomodate for students who may not have the access to the site outside of campus hours and not as a prescriptive measure. Good luck in finishing up this idea for the assignment.

  4. Thank you all for your useful comments; Vanitha yes i am planing in organizing a training session on the introduction to Wiki for the students prior to the implementation of the intervention.
Yamin, students reflection on the process of skills acquisition will be after they have practised the acquired clinical skills and yes it will be part of the learning process. They would also provide feedback on the use of the intervention for evaluation purposes.
